Which kind of ride?

Wheelchair transportation
A wheelchair van has a ramp or lift and tie-downs, so the rider stays seated in their own wheelchair or power chair for the whole trip. It suits anyone who cannot transfer into a car seat safely.
Stretcher transportation
A stretcher (gurney) van carries a rider who must lie flat or reclined, usually with a two-person crew who move them bed to bed. It is a non-emergency alternative to an ambulance when no medical care is needed on the way.
Ambulatory medical rides
Ambulatory rides are for people who can walk, with or without a cane or walker, but should not drive. Good providers help from the door, not just the curb.
Bariatric transportation
Bariatric transport uses wider, heavy-duty wheelchairs, lifts or stretchers for riders over the standard weight limit, often around 300 to 350 pounds. Tell the provider the rider’s weight when you book.

Booking a ride

  1. Pick the ride type. Choose by how the rider travels: walking, seated in a wheelchair, or lying down.
  2. Check who pays. Medicaid riders book through their plan. Everyone else calls a provider directly.
  3. Call two or three providers. Ask about price, wait time, stairs and how far ahead to book.
  4. Confirm the day before. Give the pickup address, unit number and appointment time.
